Cape Middle School Nordic Ski Team

Practice begins Monday December 7 -2:30-3:45

Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays.  No practice on half-days or holidays.

Races are Thursdays- beginning January 7 and finishing February 11.  A final ‘state’ race usually occurs the week after that, and skiers are selected to participate based on performance and availability.

Dryland:  Dryland (pre-snow) practices will include running, core strength activities, flexibility, plyometrics and field games.  Dryland practices are scheduled 2:30-3:45 on Mondays and Wednesdays unless otherwise noted.  Please meet on the lacrosse field next to the middle school parking lot ready to go at 2:30.

·        Bring ski poles to dryland practices.  Also, I can’t stress this enough- dress properly!  Good comfortable sneakers are a must.  Also, endurance athletes need to dress in layers.  Always have a hat and mittens on hand too.

On Snow: Once we have snow we will either be skiing on the Gull Crest Trails or taking a bus to Riverside (Portland) or Twin Brook (Cumberland).  If local, practice goes from 2:30-4:00 Mondays and Wednesdays.  If we ride the bus, we usually return between 5 and 5:30.

Equipment:  All equipment can be stored in the ‘equipment room’ near the gym.  Keep in mind, you need to get your equipment out if you need it for the weekend, as the room gets locked.

Please invest in a SKI BAG to store your stuff.  The room has devoured loose boots and poles many a time- so be responsible and keep your things together and labeled.

YOU MUST BRING A HAT, MITTENS/GLOVES AND A JACKET TO EVERY PRACTICE!!  Get a bag together, label everything- and keep extra socks, extra mittens, a jacket and a couple of granola bars in it at all times.  Please, spend the time at the beginning of the season getting this set.  Try to have a good set of wicking long underwear to put under a pair of windpants.  Avoid cotton.  It gets wet and stays wet.  Fleece, wool and poly products are all good choices.

Skis:  NO fishscales.  We skate and classic- mostly skate.  We’ll explain this to newcomers.

Races:   Fun times.  Everyone races.  It’s an individual sport in a team concept.  It might sound intimidating at first, but you’ll be surprised once you get into it.  Schedule is attached.

Volunteers:    Please, anytime!!  We love volunteers.  You will be required to volunteer when we host our two meets.  They are January 7 and February 4.  Mark your calendar now.

Finally, one last note…  all schedules are subject to change due to weather.  We rely heavily on email communication- so make sure you’re on our list and you check regularly when we have events scheduled.  We will cancel in extreme cold or in dangerous conditions.
