4/30/08 Many volunteers are needed this Saturday morning to help seed the existing 2-1/2 km of trail beds at Gull Crest. The establishment of a healthy bed of grasses is a very important step in stemming trail erosion and will help to minimize future trail maintenance. Project Outline: Clearing – clear downed branches, large stones, leaves, etc. Trim back small brush on sides of trails. Keep established green low growth. Minor Grading – grade eroded areas, smoothing out humps and holes Trail Bed Preparation – rake bed to loosen topsoil to ¾-1 inch depth Seeding – use broadcast spreader set for 3-5 lb coverage per 1000 sq ft Final Rake – rake seed into soil Tools Needed/ What to Bring: Pruning Shears Landscaping/Grading and Garden Rakes Shovels Broadcast Spreader (need 1 additional small spreader) Your favorite drink and snack If we have the numbers of workers (20 or so) we would like to split into 2 groups working in opposite directions around the trail loop. To minimize both physical and mental fatigue, please feel free to trade off tasks – we want this to be as painless as possible. We appreciate any amount of time and effort that you can offer. Please look for us on the trails if we have already begun. We’ll be very happy to see you whenever you arrive.
